Take Heart Exercise Program

Take Heart was created by VIHA through the cardiac function clinics as a community based cardiac rehab program.  This program is for those who have one or more chronic health condition and require more monitoring during their exercise program (blood pressure, oxygen levels, etc).  It is a land-based class offered at Strathcona Gardens on Tuesdays and Fridays from 10-11:30am.  Physician referral is required.

The cost is $359.00 for the initial assessment, one-on-one 60 minute exercise session, and 12 week exercise program.  Exercise as a group, but everyone has an individualized program based on stress test results (if available) and the initial assessment.

Funding may be available for those with ischemic heart disease, congestive heart failure and/or lung disease (COPD).

Graduate program is also available.

Take Heart Physician Referral Form

After I had recovered sufficiently from a heart attack I had in August of 2010 (age 62!), I was referred to the Take Heart program run by Sarah at the Campbell River arena, and I have to say that throughout that program I was greatly impressed with the very professional but also very caring attitude she consistently brought to her work with us in that class. From day one I found she worked very much with us to help us as our mentor and encourager, much more than just instructor. Sarah always manages to find time with each individual to talk quietly with him or her.  She also displays a good solid knowledge of a considerable range of exercises for achieving many different purposes and is obviously well trained and familiar with all of the equipment. Altogether, she is a very warm, personable and skilled “trainer” with an excellent approach to people who need encouragement rather than just direction. All I can say is Sarah Wright has “got it right”(pun intended!).  I am now in Sarah’s “maintenance” program and intend to continue with that indefinitely.  -Long-time Campbell River resident Quentin Dodd
